Advice from Mom

Advice from Mom

Advice is like a design solution for your feelings. I love the bite-sized usefulness of solid, well-timed wisdom.

In 2013, I set out to design a format that would bring this personal communication method to a wider audience. The end result was a podcast featuring the wisest woman I know—my mom, Dr. Skibinski-Bortman, who is a small-town family therapist & psychologist “on a one-woman mission to mother a mentally healthy world.”

The podcast, Advice from Mom, is equal parts mental health advice and motherly love. It’s made for anyone who has ever wanted some seasoned advice on a big life question or a little help getting “unstuck” from an emotionally tricky situation.

Featured on Apple Podcasts’ “new and noteworthy” and included on NPR's The Big Listen, our mother-daughter creation collected advice from many wise women, including couples therapist Esther Perel, Ruth Pointer of The Pointer Sisters, activist Dolores Huerta, actress Michaela Watkins, and NPR's The Kitchen Sisters, as well as crisis counselors, authors, and wise creative professionals of all sorts. As the blog, Constant Listener wrote: "The high-wire act of creating a show that is as insightful as it is entertaining is no small feat, but this mother-daughter pair pulls it off with seeming ease."

Along the way, I designed all the show’s visual assets and learned a ton about life and mental health. We made 40 episodes in total, and the show has been listened to over 100k times. Enjoy a listen here.
