But in art, like in design, the creator's intention is beside the point, so I will keep this brief.

I will tell you that all of these images are composed by photos of the face, mostly my own. They are meant to be familiar and alien, disgusting and beautiful.

They were shown at the 2006 Annual "Pittsburgh's Best" show at the Three Rivers Arts Festival Gallery. For more on the show, visit the The Tribune-Review.

I used found imagery from a 1983 clipart book and a favorite song. I find the end result to be ridiculous and fun in an elegant way. I hope you do too.

This short was created for a panoramic screen (1:7 ratio) at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. It screened before the theater's feature presentation.

For the subject of this short, I wanted to explore a scientific question that has no definite answer yet. The hope was to let younger viewers know that there is still more to discover in the science world. The museum is famous for its dinosaur collection, so a dinosaur question worked perfectly.</description>

The Recycler has a long tradition in the classified advertisement business. The company has acquired many other local classified papers over the years. The Recycler hired Mule Design for bring these many classified papers, each with a strong offline following, online and under a unified brand.

As a lead designer on this project, I focused on shaping the new visual identity and the information structure of the site.

The biggest challenge of this project was creating visual ways to upsell the advertisements without sacrificing the visual appeal of the average ad. This challenge was overcome with thoughtful use of color, iconography, and copy.

Visual Concept
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/277037/rc_con1.jpg" width="640" height="901" width_o="640" height_o="901" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/277037/rc_con1_o.jpg" data-mid="1192870"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/277037/rc_con2.jpg" width="640" height="901" width_o="640" height_o="901" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/277037/rc_con2_o.jpg" data-mid="1192872"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/277037/rc_con4.jpg" width="640" height="901" width_o="640" height_o="901" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/277037/rc_con4_o.jpg" data-mid="1192882"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Once the visual direction was agreed on and the wireframes were flushed out, I started building out the set of page templates.

Good visual design always exposes gaps in the wireframes. This project involved a lot of collaboration between the interaction designer and myself to finalize the system visually and functionally.

Page Templates

		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/276799/titles_fs.jpg" width="640" height="74" width_o="640" height_o="74" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/276799/titles_fs_o.jpg" data-mid="1220453"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;There are many ways to find event tickets online. The ticket search engine,
Fan Snap differentiates itself in this space with unique ticket-finding features. The start-up hired the design consultancy, Mule Design to make their site as visually compelling as it is helpful.

Finding a Ticket on an Interactive Map&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/276799/fs_map.jpg" width="640" height="534" width_o="640" height_o="534" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/276799/fs_map_o.jpg" data-mid="1192974"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

As the visual designer on this project, I faced the challenge of creating a flexible visual language that held up through multiple variations on the search
experience. In the ideal search, Fan Snap has an interactive map with tickets filterable from a multiple sellers. This is when the visual language is in full force. Other times, the map isn’t interactive or there is no map at all. In all cases, the visual system must be fully thought out so the user can enjoy the task at hand—finding the perfect seat for the next game or concert.

My favorite part of this project was capturing the tone of the organization and helping them develop their brand identity. In dealing with healthcare, it's a delicate balance between friendly and warm and professional and authoritative without becoming stuffy or predictiable.Above is the chosen visual solution and below are the other visual solutions I explored to capture the organization's state-specific tone and balanced brand.

Having a band is a very fun (and very big) design project.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/268341/MF_band.jpg" width="639" height="365" width_o="639" height_o="365" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/268341/MF_band_o.jpg" data-mid="1154117"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Experiencing my first earthquake during our first band practice in 2006 inspired me to front and art direct the indie-rock band, My First Earthquake for 5 years. After 2 albums and 2 EPs, 44 shows, 37 videos, and countless wonderful times, the members of My First Earthquake all decided to pursue other projects. I loved developing this rock &#38; roll visual style and look forward to make next musical endeavor.

About Face: The Essentials of Interaction Design has be called the interaction design bible. I was very fortunate to design and illustrate the third edition. It’s brimming with complex information graphics and explanatory illustrations that I designed to fit into a clean and elegant visual style.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/268167/AF_book_cover_3.jpg" width="400" height="600" width_o="400" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/268167/AF_book_cover_3_o.jpg" data-mid="1153142"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The page layout focuses on the book’s dual purpose as a reference book as well as an entertaining Sunday afternoon read.

The cover was inspired by Cooper’s research and persona creation methods. The graphic represents the many paths of user-centered design.

As with any project, many people were involved in the creation of this book. I was very lucky to have so many of my design ideas supported and furthered by my supervisors, the authors, and the publisher. To see more, check out Amazon.

The people who work at Cooper are quite casual and relaxed in comparison.

I designed the signage for the office’s five conference rooms and two restrooms. I wanted to support the firm’s sophisticated image, while emphasizing the casualness of the atmosphere.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/268208/CS_womens.jpg" width="640" height="562" width_o="640" height_o="562" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/268208/CS_womens_o.jpg" data-mid="1153329"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Inspired by Cooper’s sketch-your-thoughts process, I developed this illustration style.

The directional signs were made of glass, backed with frosted vinyl and mounted with a metal strip. Both kinds of signs use vinyl graphics in Cooper orange.

		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/268230/titles_dff.jpg" width="640" height="74" width_o="640" height_o="74" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/268230/titles_dff_o.jpg" data-mid="1220420"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The Disposable Film Festival is a celebration of films made on non-traditional filming devices—cell phones, webcams, point &#38; shoot cameras. The festival is in its third year and has been screened internationally. I’m very proud to be the art director of this amazing festival.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/268230/DF_poster.jpg" width="640" height="429" width_o="640" height_o="429" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/9295/268230/DF_poster_o.jpg" data-mid="1153691"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Since joining the team over five years ago, I’ve focused on elevating the festival’s visual presence, juxtaposing the idea of “disposable” with clean and timeless graphics. I have shaped the identity from a symbol—an iconic parody of the don’t litter symbol—into a logotype that emphasizes the festival’s “your name in lights” philosophy. The festival is my favorite example of the power of design. Without much financial backing, everyone involved volunteers their time to create a program with the polish and quality of a well-funded, established event.

2010 Festival Trailer

The festival is more than a series of events. It's active with its online community of filmmakers all year long. I have designed the festival's website to be strong voice in the filmmaking and festival communities.
